The Mexican Colors of Poetry

by Itala Langmar

A Mexican
Obsessed with emotional colors –
Magenta and fuchsia and striking turquoise –
Remembers his land
Where long ago he was happy.
His mind returns to the house
With one door and two windows
That changes its colors from hour to hour.
This house, surrounded by flowers
Of heavenly shades like paradise birds,
Returns every night in his dreams.
But every day in his sketches
He changes the colors
To more fluorescent American hues.

By Itala Langmar

Itala Langmar is an abstract painter and a fiber artist. In both media she strives to evoke the colors and textures of Venice, Italy, her city of origin. Her work is highly influenced by the luminosity and formalism of the Venetian masters Veronese, Tiepolo, and Canaletto. Lately she has introduced text from her poems or otherwise connected to work that relates to the landscape of the soul. She calls her new body of work Geometric Lyricism.
