Sleep Drifting

by Joanne Faries

snow hills shift in blustery wind
dreams swirl, yank neighbors
from my northern childhood
into Texas landscape
but no one owns a snow shovel

I wander my past in the present
my mother calls my name. Ten again, I
pump uphill, fighting Jersey shore dunes
Sand shimmers under tires
until my spinning wheels
lose traction, no forward momentum
like this dream with no conclusions
