Vacancy

by Emily Yin

At daybreak she fired a shotgun six months
pregnant with flowers and nothing
came out. That was the day she learned that

trigger-happy on a diet. She skinned
a grapefruit and dumped it, throbbing, in
the cavity of her chest. Bruises sunset
across her heart like some bitter goodbye.
